History Of The Inflatable Boat

By Wyatt Crouch

The earliest attempt of Inflatable Boats were observed by ancient carved images of animal skins filled with air being used as one-man floats to cross rivers. These were before the days of air compressors so they were inflated by mouth. Often these images were mistaken for early scuba gear, but in fact they were the first generation of Inflatable Boats.

The 1st Duke of Wellington in 1939, Arthur Wellesley had tested the development of the Inflatable Pontoon Boat during his term as the Leader of the House of Lords. Then in the early 1900s due to technology advances in the manufacturing process of rubber, it was then possible to make the Inflatable Raft from rubber. Obviously during this time period, the Inflatable Boats were not mechanically propelled, so the only way to navigate these Inflatable Rafts was to paddle. Due to inherent flaws in the rubber manufacturing process the Inflatable Boats tended to split at the seams.

The loss of the Titanic in 1912 and the ensuing WW1 and the losses of many war ships that fell casualty to the indefensive tendencies to the submarine torpedo, Rubber Rafts gained popularity. The main reason for such a loss of like on the Titanic was due to the unthinkable fact that there were less than half the necessary lifeboats aboard her than were necessary for each person aboard to have a space.

Thanks to the first SOLAS treaty was designed to avoid such a disaster happening again. The most prominent points it made was to make certain that ships had sufficient lifeboats so that every person aboard the ship had access to a place on a lifeboat.

Cargo ships did not have a difficulty in meeting the new standards at the time as they did not carry many hands on these vessels; however War Ships and Passenger Liners had a very difficult task at hand. For the Passenger Liners to accommodate this had to stack the lifeboats where ever they could in order to meet the new requirements.

Goodyear had discovered a way to better manufacture the Inflatable Boats in between the two World Wars but unfortunately, the conservative though of the time held back its production. The inflatable boats that get produced were life rafts of square-shaped inflated rubber cylinders with a rigid floor. These inflatable rafts were stacked vertically aboard warships on deck.

A man named Pierre Debroutelle designed a new version of the Inflatable Boat in 1937. This model was the premier model with the now traditional U-Shaped inflatable tube. His design was so innovative that it was the first Inflatable Boat to be certified by the French Navy. Subsequently, a wooden transom was created and then patented in 1943. On modern Inflatable Boats, you will be able to distinguish the commonalities between the 1937 model and today's model.

As with many things, World War II changed the need for and thereby the industry on Inflatable Boats. Submarine attacks in the Battlefield of the Atlantic created escalated numbers of casualties among merchant ships as well as the many warships.

It was now that the War Ships found the real need for Rubber Life Boats which helped the rubber industry to yet improve again in quality of materials and production " now the Inflatable Boat was shaped like a traditional boat and was better than it had ever been before.

Now is the Inflatable Boats day to shine as it is no longer only a utilitarian war and rescue watercraft, it is now an economical option with can go many places that other boats can not including the trunk of your car. Inflatables are a smart option for anyone, and if the cost of boat ownership have held you back from having a conventional boat, Inflatables are an affordable option.

What that means for you is that you can search and compare prices on package holidays, flights, accommodation and more, from an enormous range of well-known brands, all within one convenient website. The fallout from these phenomena is that many brick and mortar travel agencies are going out of business, even as more people are travelling than ever before.

Online travel agents put you in control, allowing you to customize your reservations down to the smallest detail. The airlines allow the different online travel agents to have codes that they can use in their own systems to help identify the special pricing or the promotion being used. Bring The Vacation Home!

By Barb Roehler

If you happen to ask any of your friends about their choice of dream vacations, there is an even Steven chance that they might answer, "sipping a sangria, hot Jamaican sand beneath my feet" They are not alone in this wishful thinking. A large majority of us workaholics dream of a time when we can live the life of a beach dweller, living in a beach house looking out upon the ocean of our dreams.

However, until you manage to fulfill your ambitions and dreams of retiring to the south of France at the age of 50, you will have to make do with beach decor which brings back the nostalgic memory of your days in the sun, making sand castles and jumping on them, splashing everybody around you with water, and endearing yourself in many other such noisy ways to all the other holidaymakers.

That can be done by finding places where you can buy beach themed items to decorate your home with, which take you back to the sun and the sand, the beach and the seagulls, the midges and the sand flies.

You are also definitely not going to be disappointed if you are a confirmed addict to every form of sailing or boating. It does not matter if you happen to be a weekend sailor or are fortunate enough to live your life upon the sea. The different nautical or beach home decor products pertaining to the sea, ships, boats, beaches, marine life, and every other aspect of a tropical vacation can be found easily on the internet if you are looking for them.

Many of these themed products are hand crafted and also are exactly what you wanted, or to give as gifts - to other people who love the sun, sand, sailing, and slumbering by the side of the sea, as much as you do.

So what are you waiting for? Come back to memories of sun in your hair, the wind on your face, the sand beneath your feet, and possibly any other beautiful memories of a holiday in the sun, by choosing some beach or nautical dcor to place around your home - items like candles, accent pillows, rugs and bedding may do the trick.

Placing brightly colored painted outdoor wooden furniture on the patio or deck so you can relax while sipping a cocktail outside would be another idea. Throw in some themed party favors and invite the neighbors over and you could have your own beach party right in your own backyard!

Cheap European Cruises: European Cruise Holidays

By Simon Campbell

If you are going to take a cruise this year on vacation, forget the Caribbean, Europe is the destination of choice. Amazing cities, historical artifacts of ancient cultures of long past, incredible scenery, all of these wait for the tourist at each port of call on European cruises.

You can pick and choose which seaside city you would like to leave from since cruise lines offer their services from major European seaport. Some companies do a large variety of sites around the coastline, while most of the time the European cruises focus on a certain area of Europe.

Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and particularly the Norwegian fjords are all favored by the trips starting in Northern Europe. You will see amazing sights like fields of dancing tulips and you can plan a day trip to delve into the fascinating history of Copenhagen. There are majestic cities too. Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki and Stockholm are home to the Uspenski Cathedral - the biggest orthodox church throughout Western Europe - and all could be incorporated into a European cruise route.

Ireland, France, the Low Countries and the British Isles are all apart of a European cruise. Scottish castles, the emerald green landscapes of Ireland and a visit to a French vineyard and chateaux are just some of the highlights of a cruise around Western Europe. Another option would be incorporating trips to historical ports of call like England's Portsmouth, in which Nelson's 'Victory' could be visited.

Take in the amazingly beautiful and historical Mediterranean Coastline as you move deep into the southern areas like the Mediterranean Sea. Croatia, Turkey, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal and the French Riviera all contain their own particular attractions. Those who have selected a European cruise on the Mediterranean can expect to see the Salvador Dali's birthplace, the famed Turkish bazaars, Monaco's grandiose vista and the coliseum of Rome.

There are a number of specialist tours in the Mediterranean region too. Enjoy the mystic feeling of island hopping between the eastern Cyprus to the Balearic islands to the west, be amazed by classic Greece and its wondrous islands.

Custom Boat Seats - Read This Before Ordering

By Frank Gehry

You may be planning to put new seats in an old boat, or maybe you want to modify existing seating. In both cases, it will make sense to address yourself to a custom boat seat manufacturer. Follow this guide to learn how to do it.

Just as there are many different kinds of water going vessels, from pontoons to fishing boats so sailing yachts and ferries, boat seats can have multiple purposes and constructions too. The most important points are the type of boat, the area where the seats need to fit in, and who will be using the seats.

When planning for customized boat seats, the best bet is to prepare a detailed list of the specifications that you want your seats to have, and then to discuss the list with several manufacturers.

Once you get their replies, don't look at the prices right away but compare the way that they reply to your request. It will tell you a lot about who is the more professional builder, and this will be reflected in your successive dealings with them. Only then look at the price.

Make especially sure that the manufacturer understands the size requirements and the measurements. It helps if the manufacturer also commits to helping with the installation, where necessary.

You should also draw up specifications on the fabric, the style and the color as well as for any special modifications. As you will be getting these boat seats custom-made, all these details will be up to you.

Don't forget any boat seat extras, such as places to affix navigation equipment or fishing rods on the boat. Storage space is also an important and often overlooked component of boat seating.

The padding itself can be variable. Seats and cushions can be manufactured with medium, firm or extra firm padding foam, so you may even want to use a variety on your boat according to the location and specific use of the seats, especially if you normally have passengers on board.

Make sure that the chosen materials match the boat and the boat seat's function. For a vintage boat, you want corresponding material. If the seats will be outside and will take a lto fo humidity, they need to be water- and salt-proof.

Likewise, for modern steel- or fiberglass-based seats, you need to ensure that any steel bolts or staples used in the construction are stainless steel to prevent rust and unsightly rusting streaks, and also that no hard parts are left unpadded, which would make for very Uncomfortable Seats.

Top Tips For Using Online Travel Agents

By Sarah Baker

In today's world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues surrounding online travel agents I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Travel agents give advice and sell and administer the bookings for a number of tour operators. It is estimated that there are some 7,000 travel agency shops ranging size from the multiples, with several hundred outlets each, to the individual shop. Travel agents must be connected to the system and have their own personalised account or PNR in order to be able to book flights and change flight times in co-operation with other agents around the world. The lessons will provide you with a working knowledge of maintaining a basic system, and how to book a tour, car or hotel.

Ask your travel agent where to get the best travel deals for students like you who are ready to see the world. Ask a travel agent! One example of how far we go and how locale-versed we are is in the case of Key West. Caribbean countries are usually "third world" - suppose they get sick? Suppose their luggage gets lost? Their website guarantees the best price and if you find a lower price before you sail they will honour it with a credit (onboard). Perfectly positioned, this property is a mere stone's throw from Bali's jewel in the crown? Home to some of the world's most prestigious hotels, its location places you in the heart of the best Bali has to offer.

If you find yourself confused by what you've read about online travel agents to this point, don't despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

Travel agents have access to all of the available flights on all of the airlines. They can quickly check availability. Travel agents sell 87 percent of cruises, 81 percent of all tours and packages, 51 percent of all airline tickets, 47 percent of all hotels and 45 percent of all car rentals. Travel agents know where to find the best deals. While they may use many of the same web sites as the ordinary consumer when planning a trip, they do have the added advantage of having access to the latest sale and promotional information.

Travel agents have packages for travelling throughout India and explore the country from the interiors as well. Travelling through a travel agent is always beneficial because they have ample experience in arranging tours and they can make your stay a memorable one with outstanding services. Travel agents are increasingly becoming more narrowly specialized. Travel Agent franchises can be a rewarding opportunity to anyone looking to enter the travel agent franchise industry. Put the experience and support of an established travel agent franchise system to work for you.

Booking a ticket from Mumbai to Bangalore would not be difficult but booking a return ticket would require him to contact operators in Bangalore, and that process becomes more difficult. Booking a cruise with a travel agency also affords the vacationer the ability to fully customize their vacation. The agency can help you select a variety of optional add-ons, often at minimal additional cost. Booking your flight and hotel at the same time may result in a better deal. Be sure to call the travel agent in advance to get the best deal on the best hotel for you, especially during the summer months when accommodations book quickly.

Of course, it's impossible to put everything about online travel agents into just one article. But you can't deny that you've just added to your understanding, and that's time well spent.

By Jamie Carragher

Hawaii is the focus of this installment of our guide to cruise holidays...

Going to Hawaii and getting to partake in the island customs is a trip in a lifetime for many people. There is nothing more exhilarating than traveling the ocean blue in search of the tropical islands of Hawaii and her sister islands. And what a paradise it is too! Sunny beaches, palm trees being blow by the soothing Hawaiian winds, vibrant sunsets all await those who journey out on a Hawaiian cruise.

For Canadian and American citizens, there are Hawaii cruises departing from a variety of seaports along North America's west coast. While many ports along the coastline have Hawaiian cruises, Seattle, San Diego, and Vancouver are the prime area's for departure locations.

Taking around fifteen to eighteen days to complete, Hawaiian cruises usually visit a few islands around Hawaii, as well as Hawaii itself. One-way cruises can also be booked where passengers opt to fly back home from Hawaii.

Lots of companies have longer Hawaii cruise vacations too, lasting 25-30 days or even longer. These extended cruises are an excellent choice for those wishing to experience a more intense adventure in Hawaii and also for those who would like the opportunity to spend some time on the other islands of Maui, Lanai, Oahu and Kauai.

Besides lying on the deck by the pool and sunbathing on Hawaii's beautiful beaches, there are numerous shore excursions on a Hawaii cruise that will satisfy even very restless travelers. Become an explorer and walk through a lava tube on the Big Island or explore the waterfalls of Maui. If this doesn't sound like a good time then you can always tour the skies with a helicopter or plane ride to view Hawaii's lush landscapes from a different perspective.

And if you want to learn more about Hawaii's impact on the world, visit her sugar or pineapple plantations. There is also the opportunity to enjoy a variety of watersports, or take a passenger submarine to explore the area's 25-acre coral reefs.

A Mississippi Cruise For Everyone

By Anthony Herbert

A wonderful but lesser-known way to start on a Mississippi cruise is to leave from the Gulf of Mexico and cruise upriver, leaving from either Galveston or New Orleans. Many cruise companies offer these options, as their ships have to travel both ways.

Galveston, in Texas, is a great starting point for a Mississippi cruise. The city, which is built on an island, has a much higher proportion of German-Americans than the surrounding area due to immigration patterns, and is blessed with some wonderful and airy parks.

Before leaving on your Mississippi cruise you may want to stop in the city for a couple of days, as interesting sights abound. There are several close and lovely beaches for sunbathing and swimming, for instance, as well as some lovely landscaped gardens in the city proper.

New Orleans is another very good spot from where to begin a Mississippi cruise, and is also worth a stay to savor its colorful history and great town center. The city is mostly recovered from the recent hurricanes, and areas of visitor interest are all accessible.

In fact, the Mississippi cruise business is important for the city and those who want to help New Orleans get back on her feet can't do better than by leaving for a Mississippi cruise from her port, after having spent a couple of days in the city.

For visitors, the most interesting part of the city is the French Quarter. This is the area for strolling, people-watching, window shopping, and feeling the heat before leaving for a Mississippi cruise.

As for food, there are lots of superb options. If you fancy Oysters, visit the Acme Oyster Bar, which is near Canal Street. For a quick takeaway snack, get a muffaletta at a baker in the French Quarter. It's a sandwich made with olives, also prevalent on day Mississippi cruise outings

You should also try out both Creole and Cajun cuisines in New Orleans. Both will be widely available during your Mississippi cruise, but it's just great to savor them on the city as well. Creole is a European-influenced, rich and creamy way to cook that you are sure to appreciate.

Cajun kitchen on the other hand is the rural, popular cooking of the area, influenced by African cookery and sometimes quite spicy, incorporating meat which is tasty, but which you may not have eaten before, such as crocodile. This is also popular on Mississippi cruises, for its exotic flair.

As for some safety tips: summer and even mid-season (spring, autumn) can get very hot both in Galveston and in New Orleans, so wear your walking shoes and take sunscreen and a hat. Also, don't leave your valuables unguarded before leaving for that Mississippi cruise!

When to get New Boat Seats

By Frank Gehry

It is hard to envisage a pleasant sailing, yachting or fishing trip, or even a commercial naval venture, on a vessel that doesn't have the right kind of seating.

Very often a recent owner of a new or used vessel finds that the existing seating is not sufficient for the purposes the boat was bought for, or is in need of modification often implying a complete replacement.

Besides the comfort factor, many leisure captains will also want to consider that seating is an easy-to-exchange part of the boat that does convey the owner's personality. New boat seats can give the vessel your own imprint.

Seating is a very prominent and visible part of any boat and its quality and looks will not only determine how the boat is perceived in relation to the personality of the owner, but also its apparent value, witch would be an important consideration if you are trying to sell a boat.

And if you are selling the boat, new seats will be just as effective as a new paint job to increase the vessel's market value, for a fraction of the cost.

There is a vast choice of different seating customizations that you can apply to your boat seats, and the number of outlets is just as plentiful, both in the physical world and on the net.

One of the most important things to bear in mind when shopping for new boat seats is that you need to look around and compare different offerings, as this will ensure that you get the most favorable deal.

There is also the security question to bear in mind. Boat seats are very important, not only for the boat's value and for what is says about you, as noted above, as well as for the comfort of your passengers.

Especially for boats routinely crewed by untrained passengers or by people who seldom go out onto a lake or at sea, safety is paramount and should also be considered when shopping for new boat seats.

Expert Answers To Travel Questions Number 1

By Chris Linch

Question 1:

I have been wanting to take a family trip, but I am on a precise budget, what do you recommend we do to get away, but save funds?

Answer 1:

Well there are a mixture of things you can do. Try booking a hotel that has a kitchen in the room so that you can cook there, save money on dining out. You can also go to less pricey destinations. Try a theme park like Six Flags or Branson Missouris Silver Dollar City as opposed to the more pricey Disney World. Travel by car, if doable. Honest, best solution, rough it and go camping. Take a camping road trip, you can stay in many cities for the price of a tent and a plot fee.

Question 2:

I have been thinking about booking a flight for my holiday, but the prices keep reducing when is the best time to book?

Answer 2:

Normally the best time to book flights is before Memorial Day, but the good news in 2009 is that you can actually still save a lot of cash if you book before the end of July. It appears that on or about August 1, we are going to start seeing increases in airfare as customer confidence rises as a result raising fuel prices. Simple answer the sooner the better, prices have bottomed.

Question 3:

There are so many travel sites out there saying they have the best deal, but they all seem similar, who is the best to book with?

Answer 3:

The one that offers the low price pledge. Thats right, it doesnt matter, you can book with any of them if they offer low price pledge. Then if you do find a lower rate you can ask them to match it. A word of warning though, watch the fine print. Some only offer this for the first 24 hours. The best I have seen, and the one we offer at our site, will match the rate up until the cancellation deadline. These are the best sites to book with because you can rest assured you will get the lowest rate.

Question 4:

I booked a non refundable reservation, but my plans have changed, how do I cancel it?

Answer 4:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most properties are very firm on these when it comes to hotels, and airlines have no exceptions. If you are talking about a hotel the best you are going to be able to do is perhaps reschedule. Some hotels will let you move the dates, very few will give you your money back. As for airlines, you are going to be out their change fee, but you get a credit for the amount of the flight minus the change fee for future travel. If you want my advice, change your plans back.

I Had No Idea That My Sea-Doo Watercraft Was Invented Over 40 Years Ago

By John A Moore

I was looking around for some information on Seadoo pwc covers and came across some really interesting information on the history of Seadoos and personal watercraft in general. I am a bit of a history buff so I put off the seadoo cover search and gobbled up a little history lesson.

I have to admit that I'm definitely part of the older crowd now, so you would think I already know when these water machines were created. I didn't have the money back then to even consider buying one, so in fact I didn't pay close attention to them at the time. I had always thought that pwcs came out in the 80's, but little did I know that was only the refinement - digging a little deeper gave me a much better picture of the early evolution.

Most people are familiar with Ski-doo snowmobiles produced by the Canadian company Bombardier. In the mid-sixties some in the Bombardier family began to toy with making a ski-doo that would operate on water. The idea started out semi-seriously but quickly got some traction amongst the water enthusiasts in the family. The Bombardier family started mocking up some blueprints. Soon they joined forces with an American named Jacobsen who was also working on a similar stand up version.

Jacobsen was interested in motorcycles and his dream was to create a machine similar to a motorcycle that would travel on water. Jacobsen and Bombardier joined forces. Before long, Jacobsen had designed the first Seadoo. Bombardier bought the rights from Jacobsen and added the signature yellow and black coloring from their famous Ski-doo snowmobiles. Bombardier also designed and manufactured the yellow and black seadoo covers. Bombardier produced these Seadoos and offered them to the market in 1968 and 1969.

The Bombardier Seadoos were limited by the market technology of the times. The 1968 engine was air cooled. This posed as a great problem as the hull wasn't big enough to allow the proper air circulation. In 1969, the design was changed to allow a liquid cooled engine. This helped a bit there were other problems to contend with. Most of these Seadoos were sold on the east coast and used in salt water. The salt corroded everything. Apparently Jacobsen had some ideas to improve the engine and reduce corrosion but these ideas were not adopted by the Bombardier family.

After a few false starts the Bombardier family moth balled the idea of the modern day Seadoo for the next 20 years. Jacobsen bought the rights to his ideas and joined forces with Kawasaki. While at Kawasaki, Jacobsen developed the first Jet-Ski. The history of Seadoo pwc is colorful and interesting.
